Abstract

The energy levels of electrons in fine semiconductor particles under irradiation were determined by electrochemical measurements. The energy level obtained, which differed from that of a bulky electrode, depends on the relative position of the valence band of the semiconductor to the donor level of a reducing agent. The activity of hydrogen production from a water-ethanol mixture with various platinized photocatalysts could be correlated with the energy levels of electrons under irradiation.
