Abstract

Total extractable lipids and glycogen decreased and total phosphorylase activity increased in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex of female rats three hours after injection of ACTH. In the z.reticularis and z.glomerulosa only a decrease of glycogen was evident. The latter change may be due to an activation of phosphorylase in these two zones, without a concomittant increase in the absolute amount of the enzyme. Thus a decrease of glycogen appears to be an early response of all three zones of the adrenal cortex to acute ACTH stimulation. The adrenal medulla showed no changes in either glycogen content or phosphorylase activity.
