p-nitrophenyl phosphate was employed to determine phosphatase activity of marine bacteria under hydrostatic pressure. A wide variation in phosphatase activity was shown to occur. With increased hydrostatic pressure the phosphatase activity of some marine bacteria increased, of others decreased, while in some it remained relatively constant.
