Abstract

A density fluctuation theory is presented for dilute solutions of 3He in 4He. The phonon velocity is determined as a function of the concentration of 3He. It is given by c = c 0(1 + 0.44 x) -1/2, where c 0 is the sound velocity of pure liq uid 4He and x is the concentration of 3He. This formula agrees with the data by Benjamin, Rockwell and Greytak and in the limit of small x with the theoretical results of Khalatnikov and Baym.
