Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the mechanism of the Vietnamese preposition “với” and its translation into Chinese from three grammatical aspects. The research corpora include the Vietnam “Civil Code”, some novels and spoken corpus (daily expression). The findings show that the Vietnamese preposition “với” has different functions and complex characteristics. Its mechanism is influenced more by semantic and pragmatic aspects rather than the sentence structure. This study can serve as a useful reference for teachers of Chinese and Vietnamese as it provides Vietnamese learners of Chinese and Chinese learners of Vietnamese with more insight into the prepositions “với”.
