Abstract
Philostratos insists on the untrimmed length of Appolonios of Tyana's hair. He no doubt had to take the biographical data into account (his hero was possibly more a thaumaturgist than a philosopher) but he imparted to his material a cultural colouring that made it acceptable to a learned Greek audience. He may also have taken up a challenge particular to the sophists' milieu by giving himself over to the task of paradoxical eulogizing, praising dirty hair as a sign of the highest wisdom.
