Abstract

This chapter covers the broad scope of information concerning the role of pheromones in communication between individuals among insects and ticks. Olfactory and gustatory receptors provide the means for detection signaling molecules. Where known, the chemical composition of the pheromones are presented. The roles of olfaction in regulating orientation, flight behavior, sex recognition and mating in insects and ticks are described. Included are descriptions of elements of pheromone reception and transduction in the different arthropod groups. The roles of sex pheromones in species discrimination and conspecific mating are also described. Finally, methods using pheromones in insect and tick control, including commercial products are described and ideas for future research and novel products are proposed.
