Abstract

The quasi-ternary Ag 2S–CdS–Ga 2S 3 system was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction and metallography. The phase diagram of 11 vertical sections, the isothermal section at 870 K and the liquidus surface projection were constructed. The liquidus system consists of 10 fields of primary crystallization which is divided by 24 monovariant lines and by 24 invariant points. The type and the temperatures of mono- and invariant processes were determined. One quaternary compound, AgCd 2GaS 4, which melts incongruently at 1284 K, forms in the system. It crystallizes in orthorhombic symmetry (space group Pmn2 1) and has a homogeneity region, which is localized along to the quasi-binary AgGaS 2–CdS section.
