Abstract

Behaviour of phase decomposition in the Al-Zn binary system has been extensively investigated as a model case in the statistical thermodynamic study as well as a base alloy in the industrial materials. In the alloys with relatively low solute concentration, it is knwon that spherical G.P. zones are formed after the alternative unmixing process by the nucleation and growth or the spinodal decomposition at its early stage. However the experimental information is still insufficient to understand the whole process of phase decomposition. In the theoretical viewpoint, the mechanism of phase decomposition in this alloy system has been not yet correctly solved, even though several attempts 2~5 have been reported. At present, it is important to re-examine the structure change during phase decomposition as presicely as possible and to investigate the scaling properties for comparing with the recently progressing theories as mentioned in the present paper.
