Abstract

Over the past fifteen years, hundreds of new nitro and polynitro aliphatic compounds were prepared in the Aerojet-General laboratories. A check of the literature indicated that although there was some knowledge with regard to the biological or pharmacological activity of aromatic and heterocyclic nitro compounds, little was known with regard to similar effects of aliphatic nitro compounds. Consequently, a joint study was set up with the G. D. Searle Laboratories in Illinois to evaluate some of the pharmacological properties of aliphatic nitro compounds. Some seventy different compounds were studied containing the mono-nitro, gem-dinitro, trinitromethyl and nitraza groupings and in some cases combinations of two such groups in the same molecule.
