Abstract

For elucidation of the structure of the aryl-substituted nitrobenzoic acids, the synthesis by an unambiguous method is essential. This is achieved by oxidation of the alkyl aryl nitrobenzenes prepared from appropriately substituted pyrylium salts. In this way, two new alternative reactions are found, which, according to the type of substitution, lead to the formation of 4H-pyranes and 4-dehydro-4H-pyranes, respectively. Another convenient reaction for preparation of nitrobenzoic acids with known structure is the oxidation of anisyl-substituted nitrobenzene derivatives which are easily obtained from the nitromethane reaction with pyrylium salts.
