Abstract

To date, no effective treatment has been found to improve the quality of life and condition of patients with diabetes mellitus. Currently, people are interested in using herbal medicines to treat diabetes mellitus or control hyperglycemia. Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn (roselle) calyx extract has been widely documented in various literatures for the treatment of several diseases, including diabetes mellitus. Roselle has many phytoconstituents, but roselle pharmacological mechanism of action and its active substances that are associated with insulin resistance prevention are still little known. This review identified the phytochemical constituent and potential effect of roselle extract to prevent insulin resistance through analysis of a network pharmacology approach and subsequent experimental research. The mechanism of action of roselle has not been explained in detail, though hypoxia inducible factor-1 pathway might be involved due to its anthocyanin content. Therefore, upcoming research needs to be carried out to answer the questions.
