Abstract
Phytoplankton net samples collected the year round in the Marsdiep tidal inlet (Dutch Wadden Sea) frequently contained Phaeocytis colonies. In the winter months of 1990 and 1991, before the spring bloom, large colonies were present in low concentrations of a few per m 3. These colonies might provide the inoculum for the spring bloom. Colonies observed in winter are similar to those occurring in spring and summer; they all belong to Phaeocytis globosa Scherffel.
