Abstract

Two new 1D ladder-like cadmium(II) coordination polymers, [Cd(4,4′-bipy)(benz)(NO3)]n (1) and [Cd3(4,4′-bipy)4(benz)6(H2O)2]n (2) (4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine and benzH = benzoic acid) have been synthesized by slow evaporation method with different pH of 5.0 and 7.0 and fully characterized. Interestingly, the pH-dependent synthesis provides different molecular topologies, 1D ladder-like chain and net for compounds 1 and 2, respectively. The photoluminescent and sensing properties of both compounds for small organic molecules have been investigated. The results show that both compounds present a selective response to acetone in acetonitrile media through luminescence quenching with LOD of acetone concentration of 0.047 v/v% and 0.091 v/v% for compounds 1 and 2, respectively.
