Abstract
This paper discusses the use of a petri-net model within a simple diagnosis system for a laboratory assembly station. A two-level detector and response scheme is introduced and it is demonstrated that the scheme can be implemented within an assembly control system driven by a low specification PLC. The paper also illustrates the benefits of considering diagnostic issues during system design, and concludes that such a simple scheme can be advantageous from the perspective of developing efficient diagnostic approaches for more complex manufacturing situations.
