Abstract

The permeation rate and selectivity of pretreated cellulose hydrate membranes for binary mixtures of alcohols and water, as well as their pure components, were studied at 333 K. The membranes were modified by solvent pretreatment with isopropanol, water, or their binary mixtures, and by heat treatment in air. The permeation rate of membranes towards the pure components and their mixtures depends very strongly on the preswelling of the membrane. The data obtained with solvent mixtures differ significantly from those expected on the basis of the pure component permeation rate. With increasing pressure at the permeate side, the composition of permeate approaches the thermodynamic equilibrium vapour composition of the feed mixtures.
