Abstract

An attempt is made to interpret a number of features observed in connection with bandcrossings in nuclei in the A = 170 – 180 mass region. It is shown that it is important to consider even relatively moderate deformation changes. By using deformations determined from cranking model calculations it is possible to understand — at least qualitatively — many of the experimentally observed properties of nuclei in this mass region.
