Abstract

Brazil is a major producer of food, fiber, and bioenergy because the natural and technological conditions are favorable. The Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro governments have encouraged the deforestation and occupation of indigenous territories. They have lowered social protection and family farming policies. As a result, one third of the population is food insecure and more than 33 million people have fallen back into poverty. The current government should prioritize the fight against poverty and hunger. It will have to (a) recover social protection policy and stimulate food production in a more sustainable way through family farming and (b) revitalize institutions, environmental protection programs, and resume international agreements on climate and biodiversity.
