Abstract

Prescribing interventions have an important role in the care offered to substance misusing clients, and treating drug users within a primary care setting is becoming increasingly accepted as normal practice. More GPs are being trained in substance misuse management and prescribing, often within a Locally Enhanced Service framework. However few nurses have so far grasped the opportunities and challenges provided by non medical prescribing within this field. In this article, Beverley Harniman, one of the first nurse prescribers in the country to prescribe controlled drugs under supplementary prescribing arrangements, reflects on her experiences over the past 2 years in the field of substance misuse.
