Abstract
The recent increases in data sharing possibilities through technology have given way to a rise in concerns about the privacy of personal data. There has also been an increase in the number of studies approaching the subject from different perspectives (legal, technical, and political). It is important for libraries, as organizations employing personal data in their service delivery, to conduct relevant activities and raise awareness on this subject. Accordingly, the present study, patterned as a situation research study, aimed to evaluate the approaches of the administrators of academic libraries towards the privacy and protection of personal data. The study collected data from the administrators of 16 academic libraries consisting of different scales in Turkey, transformed the same into qualitative data by their content and presented the same on frequency tables. The results pointed out certain shortcomings in awareness and perception among the administrations of academic libraries with respect to the privacy of personal data. The study finally features potential recommendations for improvement in this area.
