Abstract
Pernicious anemia is said to be rare in Negroes. Our review of the last 1,000 consecutive patients with pernicious anemia who entered the Cook County Hospital contradicts this observation. This study covers the period from 1931 to 1942, during which 93 Negroes were found to have pernicious anemia. An analysis of the results of our review constitutes the subject matter of this paper. REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE One hundred and six cases (5 doubtful) of pernicious anemia in Negroes are reported in the literature. All the reports are by American authors and 14 of the cases have been reported from the Cook County Hospital by Carr 1 and by Traut. 2 It is noteworthy in this connection that Carr's report, which covered the period from 1912 to 1920, included only 6 cases and Traut's, based on the statistics from 1920 to 1926, only 8.
