Abstract
Pernicious anemia has been associated with a number of other diseases, but there are few case reports documenting adrenal cortical insufficiency and pernicious anemia occurring in the same patient. Concurrently found with 370 cases of pernicious anemia were asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, hypertension, thyroid disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, gastric carcinoma, polycythemia, and leukemia.1However, no mention was made of associated adrenal cortical insufficiency. Wintrobe has stated that the simultaneous occurrence of the two diseases is of historical interest.2The purpose of this report is to describe a patient with adrenal cortical insufficiency who subsequently developed pernicious anemia (with a brief review of the literature) and to review the possible etiologic relationship between the two diseases.
