Abstract

The process of smectic layer reorientation (smectic layer rotation, smectic layer directional instability) under application of asymmetric electric fields is associated with a material flow along the rubbing direction. For smectic C* materials this permeation flow is located along the domain boundaries of horizontal chevrons. During the layer rotation, initially circular air bubbles inclosed within the liquid crystal, are elongated along the smectic layer plane. From this deformation we determine a linear material displacement with time and estimate a flow velocity of approximately 0.3 μm s−1 for the conditions applied.
