Abstract
The so-called laser interference microstructuring allows to vary material surfaces with respect to their chemistry and/or roughness so that their characteristics may be modified in a purposeful manner. The preparation of exactly periodical surface microstructures and nanostructures on polymeric materials is examined with regard to their geometry and their dimensions. Different parameters of a nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG high-power laser are used for this purpose, e.g. the energy density introduced into the material or the number of pulses. Apart from white-light interference microscopy and AFM microscopy the horizontal microscopy is employed for an analysis of the surface features, to assess the hydrophobic nature and chemical variation of the polymer surfaces after they underwent a laser induced modification.
