Abstract
A periodic microstrip leaky wave antenna (MLWA) with double-sided shorting vias is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a long rectangular patch with alternatively loaded shorting vias on each side. The shorting vias connects the antenna patch and the ground plane to form a shorting circuit. The proposed antenna can scan from backward to forward using this simple structure. The open stop-band (OSB) problem can be nearly suppressed when the parameters are selected appropriately. The measurement results of the fabricated antenna show that the main lobe scans electronically from 148° to 32° in the H-plane (y-z plane) toward the end-fire (+z direction) as the operating frequency changes from 4.5 GHz to 9.6 GHz. The peak gain of the antenna is 13 dBi.
