Abstract

ABSTRACT This analysis of personal narrative as performance identity explores the reperformance of marginalized embodiment in group fitness classes in the national fitness affiliate CrossFit and the national Pure Barre franchise. The researcher re-connects with a participant from a study two decades ago focused on bulimic identity as a personal narrative performance. The participant and author struggle through the re-emergence of past co-performances of marginalized embodiment as they participate in national boutique fitness culture. The narratives illuminate the role of co-meaning-making in daily performances of self that reiterate rather than resist marginalization, even when cultural spaces offer opportunities for potentially inclusive co-performance.
