Abstract

This paper analyzes the volume Performance Studies. An Introduction in search of answers to the fundamental question: what role has the theater in Schechner’s performance theory and therefore in Performance Studies? In this regard, a comparison is proposed between the conceptions of the relationship between theater and performance in Performance Studies and in New Theatrology; secondly Grotowski’s example is called into question, whose encroachments bring out some unresolved ambiguities and contradictions at the bottom of Performance Studies; finally, the revival in grand style of a (political) commitment of the theater in the last Schechner is noted.
