Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose The study determined (i) the mediation effect of motivation to transfer on the relationship between performance self-efficacy and (a) training design (b) farmer capacity to transfer and (c) training transfer; and (ii) the mediation effect of training design on the relationship between performance self-efficacy and training transfer. Design/Methodology/Approach A survey of 301 bean seed farmer trainees in South-Central Uganda was conducted, and data was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings Motivation to transfer and transfer design partially mediated the hypothesized relationships, with performance self-efficacy as the independent variable, and training design, farmer capacity to transfer, and training transfer as the dependent variables. Practical implications Pre-training strategies in which trainees with high levels of performance self-efficacy are selected coupled with market opportunities will motivate trainees more leading to enhanced transfer. Originality/Value The mediation analysis for a specific agricultural training for small-scale farmers has been conducted and the interactions between critical variables that inform practice and science verified. Theoretical implications The role of motivation to transfer and training design as mediating variables has been confirmed especially for critical pre-training transfer stages for which interventions can be planned.
