Abstract

The instrumentation and field performance of a 250-ft high dam constructed of a micaceous schist are described. Maximum compression of the rockfill was in excess of 8%, compared with 2% for the compacted core of residual soil. Maximum settlement of the rockfill during construction was 3 ft with up to 2 ft of differential vertical movement between the core and rockfill. Significant upstream and downstream movements developed within the rockfill shells during construction and first filling of the reservoir. Post-construction movements and settlements of the embankment have been modest. Prior to construction, in-situ torsion shear tests were performed on the micaceous schist and large-scale field direct shear tests were made on the compacted rockfill. The over-all performance of the embankment is excellent.
