Abstract

AbstractWe studied an improvement in the error rate performance of the PRML system in perpendicular magnetic recording. We improved the decoder performance by adopting an AR channel model in the estimation calculation of the input sequence in Viterbi decoding. We determined the required signal‐to‐noise ratio at the readout point and the line recording density needed to achieve a bit error rate of 10−4 from computer simulations and recording and playback tests using a spinstand, and compared them to a conventional PRML system. The results clearly showed improved performance in the PRML system by using a Viterbi decoder employing the AR channel model. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
