Abstract

ABSTRACT The simultaneous implicit approach proposed by Dommel and Sato [H.W.Dommel and N. Sato, 1972] has become the state-of-the-art for transient stability simulation. A high speed algorithm for the simulation of power system dynamics, based on Dommel-Sato method, was proposed in [R. Sreerama Kumar et al, 1990]. This paper presents the results of exhaustive investigations into the performance of the high speed algorithm. A typical Indian power system consisting of 122 buses, 154 branches and 14 generators was chosen as the test system. The investigations reveal that the performance of the algorithm is affected more or less by certain factors such as the complexity of the synchronous machine modelling, the severity of disturbance, the presence of sources of network solution iterations in the algorithm etc.. In general, the high speed algorithm shows significant improvement over the Dommel-Sato method. At worst, it performs as well as the Dommel-Sato method.
