Abstract

AbstractNon‐fossil fuels are urgently needed for maritime and inland shipping applications to mitigate the sector's adverse impact on the global climate. This study investigates the performance of potassium borohydride (KBH4) as an alternative, carbon‐free energy carrier on the basis of detailed process simulations of the overall energy storage cycle in Aspen Plus®. After optimizing the individual on‐board and off‐board process steps, the feasibility of installing a KBH4‐based energy supply system on board of an inland‐waterway cargo vessel is evaluated and critical process steps are highlighted along with current research challenges.
