Abstract

The utility model of owning large central station generation and one‐way flow of power to customers has shifted to a model of two‐way power flow where behind‐the‐meter renewable energy and battery storage are owned by customers (i.e., prosumers). Customers can now consume, generate, and store electricity. In addition, instead of investing in new transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure to meet growing energy loads, regulators are encouraging utilities to evaluate distributed energy resources (DERs) as a potential lower cost “non‐wire” alternative (NWA).
