Abstract

This article includes a comparative performance analysis of AGC with different FACTS devices over a three thermal control area fitted with a reheat turbine &suitable generation rate constraints (GRC). A novel double stage controller filter-based Proportional Derivative plus 1 plus Proportional Integral controller (PDF plus (1+PI)) controller is introduced with a recent evolutionary computational technique Grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm for tuning of controller gain parameters. The dynamic responses of the system with (PDF plus (1+PI)) controller & GWO are examined with the traditional PI & PID controller with the GWO technique. Observations reveal that (PDF plus (1+PI)) controller responses are superior to PI & PID responses. A comparative analysis of performance of different FACTS devices has been carried out with Static synchronous series compensator (SSSC), Thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC), Thyristor control phase shifter (TCPS), and Interline power flow controller (IPFC) in effect of (PDF plus (1+PI)) controller & GWO technique and found that the dynamic response of three area system for IPFC is better than other FACTS devices. In AGC the performance of IPFC with (PDF plus (1+PI)) controller & GWO technique in all three thermal areas is better than other cases. The three thermal control area with the proposed strategy performs satisfactorily with a wide variation of system loading condition region wise and size by using step load perturbation (SLP).
