Abstract

With the rapid development of Mobile Internet, Instant Messaging (IM) applications begin to transplant from the PC to the mobile terminal, to bring in Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM). In this paper, on the basis of the different network technologies, the MIM frameworks have been divided into three categories ---- telecom based, web based and wIMS2.0 based MIM. To investigate and further optimize the performance of those three MIM systems, we analyze and compare the three different MIM frameworks in terms of signaling overhead, protocol overhead, the format of data exchange, traffic of the mobile devices and response delay. After the analysis of the results, telecom based MIM turns out to have the minimum response delay, and the real-time property of this system is also good; web based MIM has the smallest traffic overhead and system resource overhead; wIMS2.0 based MIM has Restful interfaces and diverse encoding formats, and is easy to develop with good scalability. In the end, we propose a telecom&wIMS2.0 based MIM framework, which is more instantaneous than web based one, and easier to develop than telecom based one.
