Abstract

Universities hire visiting faculties as part time teachers to fulfill their faculty requirement. Being part of the academics, the visiting faculties not only have a different job title, they also receive a different treatment. The purpose of this research is to explore the experiences of the university teachers working as part time faculties in different universities of Pakistan. The experience of the part time teachers differs from university to university. However, majority of the respondents expressed similar experiences and treatment such as, no allocation of needed resources, no entitlement or ownership, discriminatory treatment by admin, no job security despite being qualified enough and performing well. On the other side some of the visiting faculties expressed that being part time offers you flexibility and you work less. Some of the teachers also mentioned that their experience vary from university to university. At one place they have all the resources needed, considered as part of the team and do not face any discrimination. Regardless of their job status the visiting faculties are part of the academics of almost every university. The universities should provide the provisions needed to perform their job effectively such a common place or a temporary working station to sit and give feedback to the students after the class. They should be considered part of the team based on their input for the department and the university.
