Abstract

The main objective of this research is to analyze the factors associated with the perception of police violence in Mexico City. The proposed analytical model considers negative perceptions of the police function; the risk of victimization, as well as different forms of informal and formal social control among the explanatory factors associated with witnessing police violence in the city. The analytical model was contrasted with data from the 2022 National Survey of Victimization and Perception of Public Safety using a binomial logistic regression analysis. The results indicate that the perception of police violence in Mexico City is associated with the objective risk of victimization, negative perceptions about police performance, as well as neighborhood trust and the implementation of police strategies such as operations and proximity policing.
