Abstract

The researchers sought to describe the characteristics of interaction experiences that were reported to elicit an emotional response of aesthetic pleasure, that is, a response of deep pleasure, stimulation, and joy evoked by what is perceived as beautiful. Two hundred and thirty‐six participants provided written critical‐incident accounts of conversations in their personal relationships that they found aesthetically pleasing and aesthetically displeasing. Open coding, using the constant‐comparison method, identified seven characteristics of conversations that were aesthetically pleasing and seven characteristics of conversations that were aesthetically displeasing. Taken collectively, the results suggest that aesthetic pleasure is evoked in communication encounters that achieve the realization of wholeness through the consummation of: selves, personal relationships, and relationships between humans and nature/God. Specific categories of pleasing and displeasing characteristics are presented in the study.
