Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the profile of pesantren Al Is as pesantren Khalaf, which is has madrasah; the role of women in the history of pesantren, the perception of ustadz and ustadzah about gender equality and feminism, and the expected role of women and its implication in education in pesantren. A qualitative study was conducted in Pesantren Al Is in Malang Regeant. Data were collected by documentary study, interview, observation and an open-ended questionnaire. The result shows that Nyai Has, the founder of pesantren, is a feminist. She believes that education for girls is an empowerment for women. Her fight was followed by her daughters, and ustadz-ustadzah as supervisor of education and santries in pesantren. There is a process of promoting gender equality perspectives which has implication in education in pesantren. Ustadz and ustadzah are gender activist of non governmental organization called Puan Amal Hayati. They conduct advocacy for the victims of domestic violence and review some classical textbooks from gender perspectives. There is a process of humanization and desacralization of classical textbooks.
