Abstract

Abstract This article is an edited version of a public lecture that addressed three main areas of the history of Penguin Books Ltd: the origin and initial history of the company and its books; some aspects of the development of the design of the books; and the impact the publisher had on 20th-century society, principally in the UK. The article argues that this impact was greater than that of any other publisher in the last century.
