Abstract

Health seeking behavior in the community is the practice of self-medication, but more than 50% housewives at Tanjungbintang sub-district, South Lampung District, did not practice proper self-medication, in term proper classification of medicine, proper type of medicine, dosage and duration of medication. The aims of the study was to develop health education aid, (leaflet), appropriate for health center staffs in doing self-medication promotion and to know that health education activities with oral communication and leaflet distribution improved the knowledge, attitude and practice of self-medication. This study was quasi-experimental design with a pre and post-test with control group. Data was collected from 140 respondents intervention and 140 respondents control from two separate villages. The location of the srudy was Warungkondang sub-district, Cianjur District, West Java. in 1998. Resnondents were housewives who were not health workers, literate, and taking medicine for their symptoms such as: fever, headache, common colds and cough during the last 2 weeks before the study. Sampling method used was systematic random sampling. Sampling frame was defined as housewives who bought medicine from surrounding vendors. Study intervention was health education activities done by health center staffs through oral communication, and the participants were given leaflet that were developed based on the people's need. Four mounth after the health education activities, respondents were given a post-test using the same questionaire as the pre-test. Data were analyzed by using appropriate statistic tools such as chi-square, impaired t-test, multiple regression and multiple logistic regression. The conclusion of this study are: 1. The health education activities with oral communication and leaflet distribution to the respondent had improved the knowledge on self-medication significantly. 2. The improved knowledge on self-medication and education had improved the attitude of self-medication significantly. 3. The improved knowledge on self-medication had improved practice of self-medication significantly
