Abstract

ABSTRACT Background . People with Diabetes Melitus are ever increasing in its prevalence , affordable and readily available drugs are in great demand. The kind of drug that suitable for this is the traditional ones. One of them is Averhoa blimbi L. Aim To analyze the effects of Averrhoa blimbi L. fruit extract administration on the reduction of blood glucose level in aloksan-induced Wistar mice (Rattus norvegicus). Methods This research utilized the pre and post test randomized controlled group design. The samples were 25 male wistar mice divided into 5 treatment groups; aquadest (negative control), 18 mg/rat of metformin (positive control), and 3 groups given Averrhoa blimbi L. extract of 0.25, 0.75, 1.25 g/kg of bodyweight, respectively. All treatment groups were subjected to aloksan induction to reach a glucose level of approximately 126 mg/dL(pretest), prior to treatments. After 14 days, an 8-hour fasting regime was applied and the glucose level was then measured (posttest 1), and within the next 14 days, the glucose level was measured again (posttest 2). Then, reductions of glucose levels were compared. Results All treatment groups (pretest, posttest 1, and posttest 2) show significant reduction in blood glucose level, as indicated by p < 0.05 for each group.. All groups treated with Averhoa blimbi L. fruit extract show that it is better off than aquadest, but still less effective than metformin. The most effective dose of Averhoa blimbi L. extract to lower blood glucose level is 0.75 gram/kg of bodyweight. Conclution Averrhoa blimbi L. fruit extract does possess the ability to lower glucose level in the blood, even though the effectiveness is still less than the use of metformin.
