Abstract

Culture shock is the state and feeling of an individual in dealing with a new environment which is different from the condition of the original environment. Culture shock is a challenge experienced by nomad students. This situation is able to handle with adversity quotient. Adversity quotient is a person's ability to face difficulties or challenges and turn them into opportunities. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of culture shock on the adversity quotient of Sumbawa University of Technology students. This research employed an associative quantitative approach. The research sampling technique used cluster sampling and disproportionate statistical random sampling. The number of sample in this study was 90 students at the Sumbawa University of Technology. The research data were obtained by using two scale research instruments namely the culture shock scale and the adversity quotient scale. The results showed that the culture shock affected the adversity quotient with the Sig. 0.005 (Sig <0.05) and R Square of 0.087, which means the higher the culture shock, the higher the adversity quotient. Culture shock in the good category with the highest aspect is the culture shock aspect as nostalgia. Meanwhile, adversity quotient is in the fair category with the highest aspect being the endurance aspect.
