Abstract

The penetrating particles in extensive air showers are compared directly with the penetrating particles in the main cosmic-ray beam. It is found that not more than 70±3% of the air-shower particles are single μ-mesons, whilst the remainder are strongly interacting particles. The barometer coefficient of extensive penetrating showers is determined.
