FROM THE LEGENDARY SEVEN SAGES to the last Neoplatonists one can find but few women among the well-known philosophers of antiquity. Like orators and historians, most philosophers were men.1 Nonetheless, when they personified Philosophy or Wisdom these philosophers almost invariably depicted her as a woman, a young and beautiful maiden, a mother, nurse, or teacher and guide.2 As such, Lady Philosophy took her place among a multiplicity of well-known mythical and religious female figures like Gaia, Athena, and the Muses, personifications of abstract concepts like
