Abstract
Abstract The degradation of leaf tissue of Saintpaulia ionantha by the pathogen Erwinia chrysanthemi strain 3937 was studied during the first 8h after infection. Monoclonal antibodies (JDF 28B 1 ), specific for the isoenzymes of pectate-lyases (PL) of neutral isoelectric point (PLb and PLc), were used for histo- and cytochemical immunolocalization of the secreted PL. The degree of lysis of pectates was checked by using JIM5, a monoclonal antibody that reacts with homogalacturonan sequences. The heterogeneous distribution of the PL labelling among the different cells and along a given wall could indicate the possible segregation of specific polymers susceptible of being recognized by certain isoenzymes.
