Pecan, Black Pecan Aphid Management, 1977

Abstract

Abstract Test blocks were established at Hidden Valley Farms near Hamilton, TX in Hamilton County in July, 1977. Each block consisted of at least 10 trees and pretreatment monitoring of aphids was conducted to time applications. Sampling consisted of counting the aphids on each of 25 leaves on each of 8 trees within each block. All chemicals were applied with a 500 gallon capacity John Bean Speed Sprayer as a dilute solution sprayed on the foliage to the point of run-off. No phytotoxicity to foliage or nuts was noted from the materials used, however the characteristic defoliation associated with black pecan aphid injury was observed to be about 50% on the untreated check and less than 5% on the chemical treatments in early September. Both Torak and GCD 9646 effectively controlled the high black pecan aphid infestation.
