Abstract

The introduction to this special issue of the Journal of the African Literature Association indicates the relevance of the focus on autobiographical writing from Africa. As even our lives can be seen as related to our life narratives, through their textual strategies and individual perspectives autobiographical forms offer insight into public debates and societal concerns. The articles and reviews in this special issue focus on a wide range of themes, including the the criteria for textual identification and the fluidity of the boundaries between genres, style as a means of political engagement, the relations between history, materiality and embodiment, and the potential of intersubjectivity for resistance.
