Abstract

This paper deals with the experimental researchs about the structure of lapped surface layer in order to obtain an information on lapping action of abrasive grain to polycrystalline materials.By means of successive electro-polishing and-etching technique, the fine structures of annealed 65-35 α brass specimens lapped by P. E. wheel were revealed together with hardness measureme at on each fresh surface. The results obtained are as follows;(1) The deformed layer caused directly by abrasive cutting extends to about 7 10μ from the surface, followed by the minor slipped layer about 20μ in thick.(2) The observed peculiar lamellar patterns consist of the slip bands caused by the cutting action of abrasive grain. This fact can be verified from the behavior of slip traces formed by the micro hardness indentation.(3) The lapping effect of single abrasive grain for polycrystalline brass has an orientation dependence.
