Abstract

Pay TV has resurfaced on the national agenda in the last year, with concurrent parliamentary and departmental inquiries into its possible introduction to Australia after the moratorium on its expansion into the domestic environment ends in September 1990. Pay TV poses a number of questions regarding the future of broadcasting in Australia, the capacity of public policy processes to Co-ordinate creatively the wide range of contending possibilities for such a major injection of new media into the local environment and, most generally, local response to Pay TV's acceleration of the globalisation of television, and technological and informational convergence. This article discusses such broad frameworks, together with commentary on the positioning of the major players in the Pay TV debate in Australia.
